Off-Grid Container Home — Solar Ready From $14,995

Off-Grid Container Homes: Power, Water, and Freedom

Going off-grid isn’t about giving things up. It’s about not waiting on a utility company to run a line to a place they’d rather not serve. A container home is one of the easiest ways to get there, because it’s small enough that you don’t need much to run it.

Our off-grid packages start with a 20FT at $14,995, plus the power and water kit you choose. The whole thing is built at the factory so it arrives ready to live in.

Why container homes suit off-grid so well

A smaller home needs less power, less water, and less heat. That’s the entire game. A 320-square-foot home can run on a modest solar array that would barely light a conventional house. Your battery bank costs less. Your water tank lasts longer. Everything scales down.

The steel shell helps too. It’s airtight and it sheds weather. With spray foam insulation, it holds heat in a way that tents and thin-walled cabins simply don’t.

Powering it

Our off-grid solar package includes panels, a charge controller, a battery bank, and an inverter sized to the home. Lights, fridge, laptop, phone charging, and a small appliance load all run comfortably on a standard setup. Add a couple more panels if you want to run a full-size fridge or a pump.

You don’t need a generator to live this way in most climates. It’s nice to have one for a week of heavy clouds, but plenty of people never buy one.

Water and waste

You’ve got three ways to handle water off-grid: a tank you fill from town, a rainwater catchment on the roof, or a well with a pump if your land allows. We size the tank to the home and your household.

For waste, a composting toilet or an incinerating toilet means no septic system and no digging. If you’d rather keep a conventional flush toilet, a small septic field works fine and costs less than you’d think.

Heating and cooling

A small wood stove or a mini-split heat pump covers most of it. The insulation does the heavy lifting — this is the single most important upgrade for off-grid comfort, and it’s not something you want to skimp on.

The real cost of going off-grid

Start with the shell: $14,995 for the 20FT. Add solar and battery, typically $4,000 to $8,000 installed depending on how much you want to run. Water tank and pump, $800 to $2,000. Toilet, $500 to $1,500. Foundation on screw piles, $1,500 to $3,000.

A fully independent 20FT, off-grid and move-in ready, usually lands between $20,000 and $28,000. No power bill, no water bill, no mortgage if you bought your land outright.

Where people are doing this

Remote acreage in the mountains. Land that a utility quoted six figures to connect. Homesteads in the desert. Quiet plots where the appeal is being left alone. We’ve shipped off-grid 20FTs to all of them, and the setup is the same every time.

What to check before you start

Look at your sun exposure if you’re going solar — south-facing with no shade is ideal. Check the water plan, whether that’s a well, a tank, or rain. And confirm with your county that a container home is allowed where you’re putting it. Ten minutes on the phone saves months of frustration.

Plan your build

Tell us how remote your site is and how much power you need. We’ll spec the solar and water to match and send a delivered price. Living off-grid is simpler than most people think once the home is built for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a container home go fully off-grid?

Yes. With solar, a battery bank, a water tank, and a composting or incinerating toilet, a container home can operate completely independently of utilities.

How much does an off-grid container home cost?

A fully independent 20FT typically costs $20,000 to $28,000, including solar, water, waste, and foundation.

What solar setup does an off-grid container home need?

A modest array with a charge controller, battery bank, and inverter sized to the home runs lights, a fridge, and small appliances comfortably.

How do you handle water and waste off-grid?

Water comes from a tank, rainwater catchment, or a well. Waste uses a composting or incinerating toilet, or a small septic system.

Do off-grid container homes stay warm?

Yes, with spray foam insulation. The airtight steel shell plus good insulation holds heat far better than a thin-walled cabin.
