Do Container Homes Rust? Truth About Corrosion and Steel Longevity

So someone asked me the other day, dont those things rust? I get that all the time. Here is the thing. Yes steel rusts but the steel shipping containers are made from is not what you think. It is Corten steel. Designed to sit on cargo ships in salt water for 20 years. It forms a protective rust layer on the surface that stops the rust from going deeper. That orange look? The steel protecting itself. We also put marine grade paint on ours at the factory. Same stuff they use on ocean containers. Where rust actually becomes a problem is if you cut holes and dont seal the edges. Or let water pool on the roof. Or put the container on concrete without a moisture barrier. Inspect it once a year. Touch up scratches. Keep plants away from the base. That is it. 25 years minimum before real rust shows up. I have seen 40 year old containers still solid after a paint job.
