How much electricity does a container home use?
A typical single-container home (around 320–480 square feet) uses roughly 300 to 600 kWh per month — noticeably less than the national average for a full-size house (about 900–1,100 kWh). That’s the whole appeal: less square footage to heat, cool, and light means a smaller power bill. But your real number depends heavily on insulation quality, your climate, and whether you run electric heat.
Where the power actually goes
- Heating and cooling (40–50%) — this is the big one. A well-insulated container home with a mini-split heat pump sips power. A poorly insulated one with electric baseboards will eat it.
- Water heating (15–20%) — a tankless or heat-pump water heater cuts this dramatically.

Why insulation matters more than anything else
Steel conducts heat and cold incredibly well.
