Container Cold Storage Rooms for Food and Produce

Quick answer

A container cold storage room is an insulated steel unit fitted with refrigeration for holding chilled or frozen goods. Units are supplied as the insulated shell, delivered port-to-port on FOB terms, with the refrigeration plant specified to your temperature range.

What makes a cold room different from a shed

A cold store is defined by its insulation and its vapour barrier, not by the refrigeration unit bolted to it. Cold air holds less moisture, and warm air moving into a cold space condenses on the coldest surface. If that surface is inside the wall, the wall gets wet, and a wet insulated panel loses its performance and eventually corrodes.

So the shell has to be built with a continuous insulated envelope, sealed at every joint, with no thermal bridge where the inner and outer skins meet. That is a construction question, not an equipment question, which is why a shell built for the purpose outperforms a standard unit with a chiller dropped inside.

Floors matter equally. A frozen store needs a floor that does not lift under the freeze-thaw cycle and that can carry pallets and a pallet truck.

Chilled versus frozen and how that changes the build

A chilled store running between zero and about eight degrees is a much easier building than a frozen store running at minus eighteen or below. The temperature difference across the wall is smaller, the plant is smaller, and frost build-up is less severe.

A frozen store needs more insulation, a heavier plant, a defrost cycle and a floor built for it. Door design changes too, because a frozen door has to keep a seal in sub-zero conditions and is often fitted with a strip curtain or an air curtain to limit the rush of warm air each time it opens.

The most efficient arrangement for a buyer holding both types is usually two compartments rather than one store running at an intermediate temperature. Chilled goods held too cold are damaged, and frozen goods held too warm are unsafe.

Sizing and access

Cold store capacity should be worked out from throughput, not from an idea of how much you have. A store filled once and emptied once a season needs different capacity from one that turns over daily.

Access is the other half. A pallet truck needs floor area to turn in, and a store filled to the walls cannot be worked. Leaving a working aisle along the door side costs some capacity but makes the store usable, and it is far cheaper to buy the right size once than to rent overflow space permanently.

Door size follows from what goes in. Hand-loaded produce needs a person-width door. Pallet-loaded goods need a door wide and high enough for the load, plus room for the truck.

Monitoring and power

Food storage is a regulated activity in most countries, and the record of temperature is often part of the requirement. A data logger recording internal temperature continuously is inexpensive and gives you the history if an inspector asks.

An alarm that notifies someone when the temperature drifts is the other piece worth having. A cold store that fails silently overnight can destroy stock worth many times the cost of the unit.

Power is the constraint that decides everything else. Refrigeration plant runs continuously, and a store on an unreliable supply needs a contingency agreed at specification, because a cold store without power is a warm box with food in it.

Delivery and payment

Units are delivered port-to-port under FOB terms. Local transport, offloading, siting on a level base and the electrical connection are arranged by the buyer on arrival.

Payment is by bank transfer in full, due in full before production. There is no online checkout; every order starts with a written quotation.

Send your required temperature range, the goods you will hold, your throughput and your nearest port for a quoted specification.

Frequently asked questions

How is payment handled?

Payment is by bank transfer in full before production.

How are units delivered?

Units ship folded and are delivered port-to-port (FOB). You arrange local transport from the port to your site.

Can I order more than one unit?

Yes. Multi-unit orders ship together, which lowers the freight cost per unit.
