Quick answer
Expandable and folding container homes are both shipped compact and open out on site, but they differ in how. An expandable unit slides or unfolds sections to add floor area beyond the container footprint; a folding unit collapses and re-expands the same volume. Expandable gives more internal space; folding is simpler and cheaper to ship.

The shared idea
Both types cut shipping cost by travelling compact and opening out on site. The difference is what happens when they open: an expandable unit adds usable floor area, while a folding unit re-expands to its standard size.
How expandable units work
Sections slide or fold out to create space beyond the original container footprint, giving a larger living area. This is the more comfortable option for homes because living space expands, not just the box.
How folding units work
A folding unit collapses to a flat pack and hinges back to its full box on site. The floor area is fixed. It is simpler and ideal where a standard-size enclosed space is all that is needed.
Which suits living space
For a home, expandable units usually win because the internal floor area grows, making room for bedrooms, kitchens and family living.
Which suits utility and repeat use
Folding units suit offices, stores and utility spaces, and where many identical units are needed, because the mechanism is simpler and the shipping efficiency is high.
