Quick answer
Container home flooring must suit a steel-framed unit, moisture and heavy use. Options include vinyl, tile, engineered timber and laminate, each with trade-offs in warmth, durability and maintenance. In a container, the subfloor and insulation beneath the finished floor matter as much as the surface.
- Vinyl and laminate are common, affordable and hard-wearing
- Tile suits bathrooms and wet areas
- Engineered timber adds warmth at a higher cost

Start with the subfloor
Under the finished floor lies the subfloor and its insulation. Because steel conducts heat and cold, floor insulation matters as much as the surface you see and touch.
Vinyl and laminate
Hard-wearing, affordable and easy to clean, vinyl and laminate suit most rooms and handle moisture better than solid timber. A practical default for rentals.
Tile
Tile suits bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas, and is easy to clean. It feels colder underfoot, which underfloor warmth or rugs address.
Engineered timber
Engineered timber adds warmth and character and is more stable than solid wood in a moving steel box. It costs more and needs a little more care.
Wet areas and transitions
Use moisture-tolerant flooring in bathrooms and kitchens, and keep transitions neat where flooring changes.
